Gynecology is a branch of medicine dedicated to women’s health, particularly their reproductive health. A gynecologist is a physician who specializes in gynecology. When should I see a gynecologist?

Girls in the U.S. get their first period around age 12. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that girls should have their first gynecological exam between the ages of 13 and 15. This is to help girls understand that there is a doctor dedicated to their reproductive health.  However, a pelvic exam is usually not part of that first visit. Pelvic exams are recommended starting at age 21.  From there, you should make an appointment with your gynecologist at least once a year for your well-woman checkup and any recommended screenings. You should also make an appointment with your physician if you notice any abnormal symptoms.  

How do I choose a gynecologist?
