Fibroid Facts

Main Symptoms

Fibroids can cause a wide range of symptoms, and the severity and type of symptoms can vary greatly from woman to woman. Some women may experience heavy and prolonged menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain and pressure, while others may have no symptoms at all. The diversity of symptoms makes it difficult to pinpoint fibroids without a thorough gynecologic evaluation.

Mistaken Symptoms

Some symptoms of fibroids, such as mild cramping or changes in menstrual bleeding, can be mistaken for normal menstrual changes. It's important to seek guidance from a gynecologist who specializes in fibroids to differentiate between typical menstrual symptoms and those that may be indicative of fibroids to ensure an accurate diagnosis.

Fibroid Sizes

Fibroids can vary in size, ranging from small, undetectable growths to large masses that distort the shape of the uterus. Additionally, fibroids can be located in different parts of the uterus, including the inner lining, outer surface, or within the uterine wall. The size and location of fibroids can affect the severity of symptoms.

Fibroid Awareness

Some women who have fibroids are not aware of them because the growths can remain small and not cause symptoms or problems. As a result, they may not seek medical attention or attribute their symptoms to other causes. Lack of awareness can lead to under diagnosis and delayed treatment.

Fibroid FAQs

Fibroids are common, with approximately two in three women developing at least one fibroid during their lifetime. In the United States, an estimated 70% of white women and over 80% of women of color will have uterine fibroids before the age of 50. While many women with fibroids do not experience symptoms, more than two million women in the US undergo treatment for uterine fibroids each year.

Fibroids can affect women of all ages, from childbearing age to the postmenopausal stage of life. Various factors, including age, race, and the onset of menstruation, can influence the likelihood of developing fibroids.

While fibroids may impact fertility, Louisiana Women’s Healthcare Center for Fibroid Care offers specialized uterine-preserving treatments to support a woman’s individual reproductive health goals. Depending on their size, location, and number, fibroids can interfere with the normal functioning of the reproductive system and affect a woman’s ability to conceive or maintain a pregnancy. If you are concerned about how fibroids may be affecting your fertility, it is recommended you seek expert care from a gynecologist at Louisiana Women’s Healthcare Center for Fibroid Care.

The treatment options for fibroids depend on factors such as size, number, and location. At Louisiana Women’s Healthcare Center for Fibroid Care, our expert gynecologists can help reduce symptoms through a range of advanced treatment options, including minimally invasive radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for fibroid removal.

Breakthroughs in Fibroid Treatment

Treating fibroids is not a one-size-fits-all approach. The best treatment plan is determined based on factors such as the severity of symptoms, future fertility desires, and personal preferences. Our center offers a comprehensive range of medical, surgical, and minimally invasive procedures to provide lasting relief tailored to your unique situation.

  • Medication Management
  • Myomectomy/Hysterectomy
  • Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)
  • Endometrial Ablation
  • Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

RFA Treatment of Fibroids

Louisiana Women’s Healthcare Center for Fibroid Care, our team of compassionate physicians specialize in minimally invasive and incision-free fibroid removal procedures. We are at the forefront of utilizing radiofrequency ablation (RFA) to effectively target, shrink, and eliminate fibroids while preserving the uterus and any surrounding tissue. This approach is particularly beneficial for women who wish to maintain their fertility or avoid undergoing a hysterectomy. One of the advantages of RFA is that it can be performed on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to return home on the same day. This reduces the need for hospitalization and promotes a quicker recovery and a faster return to normal activities.
