What is birth control and how does it work?

Birth control, or contraception, is any way in which you prevent pregnancy. Birth control methods may work in a number of different ways.

  • Barrier methods of birth control get their name because they block sperm from entering your uterus. They don’t rely on hormones or other drugs to prevent pregnancy.  Barrier methods must be used before you have sex. If sperm can’t reach an egg, it can’t be fertilized, and you can’t get pregnant.
  • Hormonal contraceptives work by preventing ovulation so you can’t get pregnant. They also change the cervical mucus to make it more difficult for the sperm to go through the cervix and find an egg.
  • The most common form of permanent birth control for women is called a tubal ligation or having the “tubes tied.” This is a safe and highly effective option for women who wish to prevent pregnancy permanently.

How else can I benefit from taking birth control?

You know birth control can help you avoid getting pregnant, but many hormonal birth control methods (the pill, some IUDs, patches, and implants) offer other benefits including:

Birth control options may offer you some benefits besides pregnancy prevention, but they do not protect you from STDs.

Taking birth control now will not hurt your chance of getting pregnant in the future. All reversible birth control methods will help prevent pregnancy while you’re using them, but none have long-lasting effects on your ability to get pregnant when you stop.
